Frequently Asked Questions:
Why are there two names - Barkala Farm Stay or Pilliga Pottery?
The original farm land bought by the Rickert Family is called "Barkala" (an old aboriginal name for: "open space in the forest"). This land was used for farming but also became the home of two businesses over the years - Pilliga Pottery and Barkalafarmstay.
Where is Pilliga Pottery located?
Located 35km north of Coonabarabran, NSW - at the end of a 10km dirt road. The only access is via the Newell Highway, Borambitty road, and Dandry road.
Is the 10km dirt road the only way there?
It is the quickest and easiest way for the public, yes.
Is there reception on the farm?
No, there is no reception near the buildings. Reception is lost on the way in. There is some reception on our bush walks.
Is the farm stay off grid?
Yes! Our entire establishment is off grid. This means we don't use water, electricity or any other services from town. We even bring our own rubbish to the tip ourself. Please be mindful when visiting us.
Is there wifi?
We provide free wifi to all our customers and residents. This is a satellite set up and is a limited service only. It can not be used to download movies and big files.
Is Pilliga Pottery 100% Australian-made?
Yes it is! We use Australian clay which gets processed on site and transformed into our unique earthenware products.
Are there snakes on site?
Yes, that is possible in the warmer month of the year. We live in balance with all Australian natives animals and therefore a snake sighting might be possible.
What should I bring if I stay there?
Or what shouldn't you? Please don't bring any electric cooking devices or power hungry items as our solar system can't handle the extra load. If you like to pack smart, be ready to get exposed to temperatures similar to outdoors. A torch, sun protection, water bottle, mosquito spray, hot water bottle and good hicking shoes are just a few examples.
